Captain Fantrop

Stranger in a Strange Land

Captain Willem van Tromp is the skipper of the Champion and one of the people who brought Valentine Michael Smith back from Mars. His return puts a familiar shipmate beside Smith during the public diplomatic proceedings, while his status as a water brother reveals that Smith’s intimate bonds extend beyond the people who first sheltered him on Earth.

Identity and Return

Van Tromp enters the public meeting with Dr. Nelson, the Champion’s surgeon. Smith greets both men with delight, and their arrival gives him a welcome point of personal connection amid the cameras and formal political ceremony. Jubal Harshaw uses the interruption to change the seating: with the immediate need for a bodyguard gone, Smith is placed opposite the Secretary General, while Harshaw sits beside him as counsel and discreet guide.

Smith has only a hazy grasp of human ceremonial manners, so Harshaw has prepared small, nearly invisible signals for such actions as standing, sitting, bowing, and shaking hands. The reunion therefore has two functions: it restores Smith to the company of the expedition crew and gives him something meaningful to do in a tightly managed public appearance.

Water-Brotherhood and Trust

Dr. Mahmoud privately explains to Harshaw that both van Tromp and Dr. Nelson are also Smith’s water brothers. Smith wants to renew the ritual with the reunited shipmates immediately, but Mahmoud has asked him to wait until they are away from the crowded meeting. Harshaw approves, suggesting that a private setting will better suit the commitment. Mahmoud expects the other two to come along if possible, and confirms that no further members of the Champion’s company are likely to appear.

The exchange shows that the bond is not merely an abstract title: Smith wants to enact it again with his returning brothers, and Mahmoud treats the ritual as important enough to protect from the public crush. For Harshaw, the revelation also hints at how wide Smith’s web of commitments has become. He asks whether other brothers may turn up, trying to understand the reach of a relationship system that keeps extending beyond the household he is managing.

At Harshaw’s Gathering

At the later private gathering, Harshaw offers drinks to the returning crew. Van Tromp agrees with Nelson that he would rather have Scotch than the akvavit Harshaw initially proposes; Nelson adds that he will not drink akvavit unless it has been chilled overnight. The exchange gives the reunion an ordinary, companionable note after the diplomatic formality, with the captain speaking up plainly about what he prefers.

The supplied scenes establish van Tromp’s place in Smith’s circle through presence, ritual kinship, and the prospect of continued private contact. They do not describe a separate later decision or outcome for him; his significance here lies in returning as a trusted member of the Champion’s company and in making Smith’s far-reaching bonds visible to Harshaw and the public around them.
